Choose a hotel in Friedrichshain if you are travelling with friends or want to experience Berlin’s lively and alternative atmosphere.

This vibrant neighbourhood was once part of East Berlin. Located east of the Spree, Friedrichshain is home to the East Side Gallery, the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall, covered with murals by artists from around the world.

To the west of Friedrichshain, the district’s Soviet past is still clearly visible along the broad Karl-Marx-Allee, lined with monumental residential blocks typical of East German architecture.

Friedrichshain was once a favourite neighbourhood for students and artists, thanks to its relatively low rents. With gentrification, however, the old buildings are gradually being renovated and independent designer shops and trendy cafés have appeared around Boxhagener Platz. The Sunday flea market is one of the most visible signs of this transformation.

Our favourite hotel in Friedrichshain: The Stayery

This stylish design hotel is suitable for both short stays and stays lasting several months. Each studio or apartment comes with a kitchen, while guests also have access to a laundry room, a large table for working and a comfortable lounge area with a TV.

The staff are professional and welcoming, and the studios and apartments have a Scandinavian-inspired design.

Boxhagener Platz and the nearest underground stations are about a 10-minute walk away.

The best value for money: Backpacker Berlin

A small, quiet and somewhat hidden hostel.

The ground floor is a little dark, while the rooms upstairs are brighter. What makes this hostel particularly appealing is its excellent location in the heart of Friedrichshain, tucked away in a peaceful, flower-filled little street that feels a world away from the surrounding bustle.

The M13 tram stop is just a few steps away.

The best areas to stay in Friedrichshain

The heart of Friedrichshain is around Boxhagener Platz. This area, together with Warschauer Strasse, is particularly lively.

You will find plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs, as well as markets at the weekend. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, simply move a few streets away from the main thoroughfares.

Areas to think twice about in Friedrichshain

The newer neighbourhood around the East Side Gallery and Ostbahnhof has a large number of hotels. However, it still lacks some of the atmosphere and character found elsewhere in Friedrichshain, and Mühlenstrasse is a busy and noisy road.

Karl-Marx-Allee and the surrounding streets are well worth exploring for their impressive Soviet-inspired architecture. However, this area is mainly residential and is less lively than the neighbourhood around Boxhagener Platz and Warschauer Strasse.
