The best neighbourhoods to stay in Berlin

There are so many hotels in Berlin that the hardest part can be deciding which neighbourhood is right for you.

It really depends on what you want to see and do during your stay. Each of Berlin’s central neighbourhoods has its own atmosphere, advantages and character.

Here is our guide to the main areas to consider when choosing where to stay in Berlin.

Mitte: central, historic & trendy

Mitte is where you’ll find many of Berlin’s main sights. Staying here puts you within easy reach of Museum Island, Alexanderplatz, the grand boulevard Unter den Linden and the Brandenburg Gate.

Hotels in Mitte tend to be relatively expensive. If you have a higher budget, look around Gendarmenmarkt, where you’ll find some of Berlin’s most elegant historic buildings.

For something a little more atmospheric, look around the streets near Hackescher Markt.

The narrow streets of Berlin’s former Jewish Quarter are lined with independent shops, stylish cafés and art galleries.

Prenzlauer Berg: relaxed, stylish & family-friendly

Neighbouring Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg is a great choice if you are looking for a charming hotel in Berlin.

The neighbourhood has undergone a major transformation over the past few decades and is now one of the most pleasant parts of the city, with cosy cafés, a relaxed family atmosphere, independent shops, excellent restaurants and local farmers’ markets.

It is a particularly good choice if you want to experience a more relaxed side of Berlin while remaining within easy reach of the city’s major sights.

Charlottenburg: elegant, historic & residential

During the years of the Berlin Wall, Charlottenburg in West Berlin was the area where many Western tourists chose to stay.

Although it has since lost some of its former prominence to the fashionable neighbourhoods of the former East Berlin, Charlottenburg remains an appealing area thanks to its elegant residential atmosphere, excellent restaurants and art galleries, green spaces and the magnificent Charlottenburg Palace.

The neighbourhood is also home to numerous characterful, high-quality hotels.

Although it is somewhat further from the main attractions of Mitte, Charlottenburg is very well connected by public transport and provides easy access to the lakes and forests of western Berlin.

Kreuzberg: creative, lively & alternative

Kreuzberg is known for its alternative spirit, as well as its vibrant cultural and nightlife scene.

If you want to be close to restaurants, bars and clubs, look for accommodation around the U1 line, between Kottbusser Tor and Schlesisches Tor.

For a quieter experience of Kreuzberg, look around Mehringdamm.

The neighbourhood has some of the same qualities as Prenzlauer Berg, with vintage shops, excellent restaurants and wine bars alongside a distinctly creative atmosphere.

Friedrichshain: lively & full of energy

If nightlife and a lively atmosphere are high on your list, Friedrichshain is another neighbourhood worth considering.

The area’s distinctive mix of alternative, bohemian and creative culture is concentrated between Karl-Marx-Allee, Warschauer Straße and Revaler Straße.

Within this lively area you’ll find plenty of brunch spots, cosy bars and independent designer shops, alongside a highly international crowd.

Head towards Boxhagener Platz to explore the neighbourhood’s cafés, restaurants and shops. For Berlin’s famous club scene, follow Revaler Straße towards the former industrial railway area.
