If you’re looking for a hotel in one of Berlin’s liveliest and most characterful neighbourhoods, Kreuzberg is a great place to start.

Kreuzberg has two very different sides: the alternative, multicultural atmosphere around Oranienstrasse and Görlitzer Park, known locally as Kreuzberg 36, and the more bohemian and affluent area around Bergmannstrasse, with its former industrial courtyards and leafy streets, known as Kreuzberg 61.

In the northern part of Kreuzberg, you are already close to central Berlin, with Checkpoint Charlie, Potsdamer Platz and the Topography of Terror all within easy reach.

But what makes Kreuzberg particularly appealing is the character of its individual Kieze, or neighbourhoods, each with its own atmosphere. Explore the Turkish market on Tuesdays and Fridays, walk along the Landwehr Canal, try Berlin’s traditional Volksküchen in former squats, browse vintage shops, or spend an evening discovering the area’s many bars and clubs, with music ranging from electronic to alternative and everything in between.

We have personally visited all the hotels in our selection to assess the quality of their accommodation and services. Our in-depth knowledge of Berlin’s neighbourhoods also allows us to evaluate their immediate surroundings, including the atmosphere, public transport, restaurants and activities nearby.

Our favourite hotel in Kreuzberg: Lekkerurlaub

A lovely hotel offering rooms for under €100 a night, Lekkerurlaub is located in a pleasant and lively neighbourhood with plenty of restaurants and cafés to choose from.

The showers are shared but clean, while the rooms are quiet and tastefully decorated. This is a popular place to stay, so booking in advance is recommended.

U8 Schönleinstraße

The most stylish hotel: GINN City & Lounge Yorck Berlin

Located in a modern building, this 121-room hotel is worth considering for its rooftop terrace and friendly staff.

The rooms are comfortable and functional, and the hotel also has a restaurant and bar. The only drawback is that it is slightly removed from the heart of Kreuzberg, but it is just a short walk from Gleisdreieck Park, making it a good option if you prefer a quieter setting with easy access to the city.

S Yorckstraße

The most luxurious hotel: Hotel Orania

Recently opened in a historic building dating back to 1913, Hotel Orania is one of the few upscale hotels in the vibrant Oranienstrasse area, surrounded by bars, restaurants, galleries and independent shops.

If you want to stay right in the middle of the action while enjoying comfortable accommodation with a classic yet contemporary luxury feel, this is an excellent option.

U8 Kottbusser Tor

The quietest hotel: Three Little Pigs

Located in northern Kreuzberg, and therefore close to many of Berlin’s main tourist attractions, Three Little Pigs is a hostel with a rather unusual setting.

It occupies a former 19th-century monastery. You can still see the church in the courtyard as you make your way to the hostel, as well as the huge former dining hall that once served the religious community.

S Anhalter Bahnhof

The best value for money: Grand Hostel Berlin Classic

This welcoming hostel occupies a beautiful historic building. Its architectural character has been preserved throughout the interior, particularly in the common areas.

The double rooms with private bathrooms overlook the courtyard and are pleasantly quiet. The staff are friendly and welcoming.

The hostel is a little removed from the liveliest parts of Kreuzberg, but its location is convenient for exploring central Berlin and many of the city’s main sights.

The Best Areas to Stay in Kreuzberg

The area around Oranienstrasse is one of the liveliest parts of Kreuzberg. If you enjoy nightlife and want to be right in the middle of the action, this is the area to look at.

Another option for travellers looking for an underground and nightlife-oriented atmosphere is the area around Schlesische Strasse. You’ll be close to numerous clubs and the Spree, and it is just a short walk across the river to Friedrichshain.

If you prefer a quieter, more bohemian atmosphere, look around Bergmannstrasse or Graefestrasse. These areas offer a different side of Kreuzberg, with independent shops, cafés, restaurants and wine bars.

Areas to Think Twice About in Kreuzberg

Kreuzberg 36, particularly around Oranienstrasse and Schlesische Strasse, is lively, multicultural and strongly associated with Berlin’s alternative culture and nightlife.

Around Kottbusser Tor and Görlitzer Bahnhof, the atmosphere can be more intense, and you may encounter open drug dealing. If you are looking for a quiet and relaxed hotel stay, you may prefer Kreuzberg 61 or another neighbourhood such as Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte or Charlottenburg.

East of Prinzenstrasse and north of the Landwehr Canal, the area is mainly residential, with fewer restaurants and less convenient public transport connections. For a short tourist stay, we would therefore recommend choosing a more central or lively part of Kreuzberg.
