Seeing the city differently

Street art offers a way to understand Berlin’s recent history, its tensions, struggles and creativity.

About the Berlin street art tour

Berlin is now one of the world’s street art capitals. While the first murals appeared on the Berlin Wall in West Berlin, it was after the Wall came down that the city became a haven for artists and collectives from around the world. Its streets, abandoned sites and constantly changing spaces provided ideal settings for this often politically engaged form of art.

Unlike a conventional guided tour, the route is not fixed: it changes according to the works that are visible, those that have disappeared and those that have been painted over. Exploring neighbourhoods such as Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg, you will discover how this ephemeral art interacts with the city and its inhabitants.

During the tour, your guide explains the techniques, intentions and messages behind the artists’ work. Street art then becomes a way of reading contemporary Berlin society: protest, memory, gentrification, identity and the appropriation of public space.
