In Berlin, architecture is a fascinating subject: destruction, division and successive periods of renewal have shaped a unique urban landscape. Different styles, eras and visions of the city exist side by side in a capital that has become a testing ground for architectural and urban experimentation. We offer 3 thematic tours to explore Berlin’s architecture from different perspectives.
Berlin’s history through architecture
Discover the history of the city through its buildings and architectural styles, and understand the diverse face of Berlin today.
Post-War reconstruction: West Berlin vs. East Berlin
Discover how architecture became a political battleground and an ideological symbol of the opposing visions of East and West.
Contemporary architecture since reunification
The vast empty spaces left by divided Berlin have gradually given way to a new European capital seeking a balance between memory and modernity.
Tour 1: Berlin's history through architecture
From the Prussian capital to the transformations of the 20th century, discover how each period shaped its own vision of the city through a selection of emblematic buildings.
This tour begins with little-known remnants of medieval Berlin. You will then discover brick buildings in the Historicist style, the elaborate façades of the Gründerzeit era, a rare example of Modernist architecture, the socialist urban planning of Leipziger Strasse and a few traces of Nazi megalomania. Throughout the tour, you will see how contemporary architecture has been integrated into historic buildings and neighbourhoods since reunification. The tour ends with the imposing Prussian architecture around Unter den Linden.
The tour offers an insight into how the same city has embodied several political and cultural identities over time, and how these different legacies coexist today.
Topics Covered
- The development of architectural styles from the Middle Ages onwards
- 20th-century crises: projects, destruction and urban transformations
- The coexistence of architectural styles and the historical reading of today’s city

Tour 2: Post-war reconstruction: West Berlin vs. East Berlin
After 1945, two opposing political systems rebuilt the city according to their own ideologies. In the West, modern architecture embodied democracy and international openness. In the East, large housing developments and monumental avenues expressed the socialist project.
This tour begins in Hansaviertel, a neighbourhood completely rebuilt in the 1950s by some of the leading Western modernist architects of the time. We then head to East Berlin. Karl-Marx-Allee, built during the same period, is a landmark example of socialist architecture. It was designed as an ideological showcase of the GDR.
This tour allows you to compare two different visions of society literally built into the city. By looking at urban forms, materials and the organisation of public spaces, the tour shows how architecture was used as a political and ideological tool during the Cold War.
Topics Covered
- Reconstruction after 1945
- Socialist urban planning and Western modernism
- Architecture as an instrument of propaganda during the Cold War

Tour 3: Contemporary architecture since reunification
Since 1990, the vast empty spaces left by the Berlin Wall have gradually been transformed through major reunification projects: international developments, landmark buildings and government architecture.
Follow your guide through the Potsdamer Platz area. The redevelopment of this vast former no-man’s-land, largely financed by private investment, was planned as an integrated urban project combining offices, shops, entertainment and housing.
You will then explore the new government district, which embodies reunified Germany. Here, the country’s new democracy is expressed through architecture: open spaces and glass façades symbolise political transparency and citizens’ access to government.
Instead of the government district, you can choose to visit the Kulturforum and embassy district with your guide. Construction of the Kulturforum began in the 1950s. The fall of the Berlin Wall gave new momentum to this museum district, which is still undergoing major development today. Meanwhile, the embassies that have been established in the Tiergarten area since the 1990s offer an interesting overview of contemporary architecture.
This tour explores how architects have sought to redefine the identity of reunified Berlin: through new neighbourhoods, the reuse of historic sites and ongoing debates about reconstruction. Contemporary architecture thus becomes a way of reflecting on the future while engaging with the past.
Topics Covered
- Rebuilding the capital after 1990
- Architecture and democracy
- The contemporary city and memory
