Prenzlauer Berg is an ideal neighbourhood to look for a hotel if you are travelling as a family, as a couple or with friends. Once known for its alternative scene in the 1990s, the area has evolved into one of Berlin’s most pleasant and family-friendly neighbourhoods, with a distinctly bohemian feel.

Today, Prenzlauer Berg appeals both to those nostalgic for its alternative past and to visitors who appreciate its relaxed atmosphere and quality of life.

You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants, cosy cafés and welcoming bars. Another advantage of staying here is its proximity to Mitte and many of Berlin’s must-see sights.

In Prenzlauer Berg, you can easily spend an afternoon sitting at a café and watching the world go by. Alternatively, explore the many vintage, second-hand and independent designer shops, including a particularly good selection of children’s clothing.

A typical Sunday in Prenzlauer Berg? Brunch at one of the cafés around Kollwitzplatz, followed by the street food market at the beautiful Kulturbrauerei, or a visit to the flea market at Mauerpark, where you can join the famous open-air karaoke at 3 pm.

Prenzlauer Berg is best discovered on foot, wandering along its cobbled streets and looking up at the beautifully preserved façades. It is one of the neighbourhoods where you can really experience Berlin’s more relaxed side.

We have personally visited each of these hotels to assess their quality. Our in-depth knowledge of Berlin also allows us to evaluate their surroundings: the atmosphere of the neighbourhood, access to public transport, and the choice of restaurants and activities nearby.

Our favourite hotel in Prenzlauer Berg: Hotel Oderberger

This stylish hotel occupies a beautiful building that once housed a public swimming pool. The historic pool has been carefully renovated and is once again open for guests to use.

The rooms are comfortable and tastefully decorated. Located just off lively Kastanienallee and close to Eberswalder Strasse station, it is an excellent choice if having access to a swimming pool is important to you.

The best areas to stay in Prenzlauer Berg

Pretty much all of Prenzlauer Berg is pleasant, but if you want to be close to the largest choice of restaurants, cafés and lively places, look around Kastanienallee, Schönhauser Allee, Senefelderplatz and Kollwitzplatz.

These areas are particularly convenient if you want to enjoy Prenzlauer Berg’s cafés, independent shops and restaurants while remaining within easy reach of central Berlin.

Areas to think twice about in Prenzlauer Berg

There are no particular areas of Prenzlauer Berg that we would recommend avoiding. However, some parts are quieter and further away from public transport.

For a short stay in Berlin, we would therefore recommend looking for a hotel closer to the centre of the neighbourhood, particularly around Kastanienallee, Kollwitzplatz or Senefelderplatz.

The areas east of Prenzlauer Allee and north of Danziger Strasse, as well as parts of Prenzlauer Berg north of the Ringbahn, are more residential and offer fewer restaurants and attractions within walking distance.
